Sampson Regional Medical Center is currently searching for Pre-Medical Students for a Rural Medicine Clerkship!

 

The purpose of the Pre-Medical Student Rural Medicine Clerkship is to expose high achieving pre-medical students to rural medical practices in hopes to encourage future physicians to work and live in underserved rural communities.

The duration of the Clerkship will be 10 weeks. The selected applicant will receive a $3,000 stipend (approximately $10 per hour on a 30 hour work week), free pass to the hospital wellness center during rotation and housing potentially available either with host family or hospital apartment.

The concept is to provide introductory skill development for basic patient care and clinical medicine. This is not a job shadowing experience. All work will be supervised by attending physician. Interns will be assigned research projects and expected to give presentations at noontime graduate medical education lecture series once weekly.

Week 1-4: Primary Care

  • Medical Assistant work and basic patient evaluation - vitals, urine analysis, documentation of chief compliant, universal precautions & HIPAA
  • Patient case management - answering phones, making referrals, pre-authorization
  • Health counseling - diet, exercise, medication compliance
  • Introduction to osteopathic manipulation

Week 5-6: Orthopedics - learn basic casting and splinting technique for minor fractures and injuries. Assist in performing basic splinting and casting when appropriate. Observe one or two operations per week when available.

Week 7-8: Surgery - learn basic wound care techniques, dressing changes. Assist in basic office surgical procedures as appropriate and available. Observe one or two operations per week when available.

Week 9-10: Inpatient medical care - take patient daily history. Enter patient information into charts as a scribe for physicians.

 

Eligibility:

  • GPA of 3.6 or higher
  • 1 year of undergraduate studies to include a minimum of Chemistry and Biology
