The Switchboard Operator is primarily responsible for calls and responding appropriately by directing the call or relaying messages appropriately through the overhead page or Netpage systems.  The operator is responsible for maintaining accurate information directories.  Operator also fulfills light work duties as assigned during periods of low call volume.


- High School Diploma

- Verbal ability is required in order to converse effectively and understand orders given under emergency conditions.

- Clerical perception is required to accurately and quickly recognize names and numbers in the hospital directory and to avoid errors in recording or paging messages in a timely manner.

- A courteous manner is required in order to deal tactfully with people.

- Basic to intermediate knowledge of computer applications to manage and use information systems.
- Ability to respond to change quickly while maintaining integrity of all information and processes.

- Three months of experience as an operator with familiarity of similar systems or equipment; high potential to learn quickly; one to three months of on the job training is required.

Hours of Work:  The work day is divided into three shifts, 40 hours per week. A rotation system is utilized in order to adequately staff the department. Employees may be called upon to work other hours for effective department operation if requested and approved by the immediate supervisor.
